Adapting the coast to climate change
Saving Pampelonne, its dunes and endangered natural flora; preserving the beach, its sand and its establishments threatened by increasingly violent storms; adapting the economy and the site to a changing climate and rising seas; reinforcing the natural ambiance of the site, stemming the invasion of cars, reinforcing the ambiance of this remarkable natural coastal area so that it remains for a long time to come in the image of Ramatuelle, i.e. authentic, such is the ambition of the draft scheme, conceived by the commune of Ramatuelle and approved on December 15, 2015 (decree no. 2015-1675) by the State.
On July 17, all those involved will gather to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the beach development plan and inaugurate the "Pampelonne Mooring - Mouillage Ramatuelle" ecological anchorage zone.
On land, these developments, carried out over the past decade, have had to take into account parameters which could have been contradictory but which, on the contrary, have been conceived as strengths to renaturalize the site and give it the capacity to adapt to global warming.
The result of everyone's efforts is here, before our very eyes. The commune's hard work has set a precedent in reconciling the requirements of the Littoral law with the need to maintain economic activities.
This project, which has now become a reality, is now a global showcase for environmental and economic preservation, while providing a platform for expression for all stakeholders: partners.
In the sea, Pampelonne Bay owes its crystal-clear waters to the silent work of the posidonia, an underwater treasure, a verdant meadow that shelters an entire sensitive ecosystem. At the height of the season, up to 350 boats anchor in the bay every day (mainly due to the frequentation of beach establishments), a third of which are yachts over 24 meters long. The search for a new balance, both economically and environmentally, was therefore paramount.
The commune of Ramatuelle opted for this ecological anchorage in application of the Natura 2000 site objective document, a fundamental tool of European biodiversity preservation policy designed with the help of scientists, which provides a suitable alternative in line with the beach development plan.
These two projects are intended to set an example and create a global showcase for environmental and economic preservation, providing a platform for all stakeholders to express their views on Thursday and Thursday.
