Ramatuelle is a medieval pituresque village huddled upto the hillside in the heart of nature. It is a quiet modest village which contrasts with the trendy celebrity side of its beaches of Pampelonne.

The commune has 2500 inhabitants.

There are two theories concerning the origin of the name of Ramatuelle which are contested by todays historians :


Rahmatu'llah : means in Arabic "God-sent". The Saracens invaded and occupied the region in the 10th century.

Camatullici : is the name of a Celto-Ligurian tribe. Chased by the Romans they hid in the forest and mountains and settled on the actual site of the village of Ramatuelle. It was named the region of the Camatullici. The theory says that the "R" of region replaced the "C" to make Ramatullucci then Ramatuelle.

A mystery to be solved…

The heart of the village is built in the form of a snail. Shops and cafés hide in secret alleyways. The ochre façades and the pastel coloured shutters are decorated with jasmin, honeysuckle and bougainvillea. What a pleasure for the senses!

On Thursdays and Sundays the local Provençal market livens up the cafés and restaurants of Place de l'Ormeau.


In July and August on market days a courtesy bus will take you from the car parks situated at the bottom of the village near the stadium to the village center.
